After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in both business and communications from Western Washington University, Robert continued his work in sales, marketing and advertising. In 1989, he took his first massage class and continued his massage studies with the Brian Utting School of Massage in Seattle, Washington, eventually becoming a licensed massage practitioner in 1991. Robert served as the Director of Marketing for the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork for two years and later opened his own hospital-based massage school in the fall of 1999, the Bodymechanics School of Myotherapy & Massage, in Olympia, Washington.
Robert now spends his time traveling throughout the world teaching his advanced training seminars. Robert is also a cancer survivor. After being diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in 2008, he has since had 14 surgeries with each removing part of his tongue. On October 3rd of 2013, Robert had a hemiglossectomy, where the surgeon removed the left half of his tongue and rebuilt the tissues with skin from his forearm. (You can see more of Robert’s story on a news video that went viral on USA Today and other websites at the bottom of this page.)
As Robert's daughter, Sara Haase, LMT, grew up in a home where massage was a way of life. From the soothing of a baby's cry to helping relieve back pain and headaches, Sara both observed and experienced her father's skills as a massage therapist. As she grew up, Sara and her sisters often received massage in Robert's massage school student clinic, unknowingly learning his techniques from he and his students over the course of a decade.
Following in her father's footsteps, Sara herself enrolled in massage school and attended her first Secrets of Deep Tissue™ seminar as a massage student. Immediately after graduating from massage school, she began training with her father on his advanced medical massage, injury treatment, and deep tissue techniques. After years of preparation, Sara became Robert's Lead Teaching Assistant in the Secrets of Deep Tissue™ class and travels with him to teach Haase Myotherapy courses throughout the United States.
When she isn't teaching with Robert, Sara works full-time at Google in the Seattle area as a massage therapist and course instructor on a variety of topics including applied physiology in the workplace.
Although Robert is currently the lead instructor at all of his seminar locations, he could not offer his courses without his excellent assistant teaching staff.
Robert has a team of assistants helping him to keep the student-to-teacher ratio low. Most courses have one teacher for every eight students practicing a given technique.
